I seen that. Crazy! I also saw some type of crab whiskey being made.

I made some tomato sauce with them. Was OK, but I'd rather have blue crabs for the Post Pasta Smack and Snack Fest. Then again, I can get lobster cheap so that trumps everything...

Two thoughts come to mind. First, if they are so invasive and widespread, shouldn't the price be coming down? Will I actually see a reduction in my bait costs this fall? Kind of doubt it.

Second, I don't care who prepares them, they will always be BAIT in my mind! 😱
Plenty of other tasty things in the sea to eat.

It's called supply and demand Mike. I can fill a 5 gallon bucket with green crabs in less than an hour, but I've got nothing to fish for with them, so we're a high supply, low demand situation. I wouldn't be surprised if some of the more savvy bait dealers along the LI Sound, especially on the CT side, aren't making runs up here to stock their stores.

All of these "cook 'em" articles, which the Maine and NH papers print all the time, have done very little to increase the demand for cooking. The clam diggers are desperate for some "ethnic cleansing" up here since the bastards are decimating the soft shell clam population. There's even a place up here that collects them and makes them molt so they are sold as soft shells. Not sure if they're really doing well, but it was just another one of those "cook 'em" media Dog and Pony Shows. I've never accidently caught a soft shell, but if I did it wouldn't be long before it would be taking a hot oil bath just to see if I should get into the soft shell business for personal dining...

Bottom line if any of you happen to be up here before Columbus Day, you can stop over and we'll fill your cooler(s) with the beasties before we can finish a few beers...

Actually, Dom, with the warmer water temps we have seen in the last few years, my local bait supplier does procure their early season green crabs for resale from locations further north. So, I guess part of the price we pay to fish for Tog in shirtsleeves in mid October is the cost of fuel for the trucking service!

I agree with you about deferring to lobster for your sauce, especially at your local prices!😀

Kinda the same thoughts when presented with a plate of Fried Calamari but at least that is tasty enough to overcome the fact that its also bait 🤣🤣🤣

Like Mike said....NFW I'll eat green crabs unless there was a nuclear holocaust and we were the only 2 organisms to survive!
