Why are the 5 gallon gas cans red, & the diesel 5 gallon cans yellow, & why are the yellow cans more money?

I'm going to go out on a limb here and say they're color coded to prevent misfueling.

Yellow is probably more expensive because of the lower production volume.

Yes , but they should be green. The diesel I mean.

I would agree in principle. Save the yellow for E85. But the color standard for the cans is set by the .gov.

However, believe it or not, there is no standard for colors on fuel pumps. I've come close to misfueling my car a time of two because my usual station has green nozzles but sometimes other stations have black on the diesel pumps and green on the gas.

I love when I drive my outboard to the gas dock and the high school kid asks "gas or diesel?"

Two things...

Be glad a highschool kid is working for a buck instead of playing video games.

There are diesel outboards. Granted, the kid's odds of seeing one are slim,... but still... U never know.

I would guess, no matter what boat pulls up, he has been instructed to ask.

Does anyone know of a 5 gallon gas can that does not leak from where the spout screws to the can? Every time I use one I have to wrap a rag around the neck to keep all the gas from spilling on the ground.

Sounds like a bad gasket, if it's the new type of gas can their are several gas can spout replacement kits available on Amazon that will let the new cans function just like the old ones that didn't make a mess.

This one has the replacement spout. I have changed the gaskets. I have tried O-rings ect. I have checked the surface of the can's opening to make sure it is perfectly flat. I have two cans and they both leak!

when I sold my boat I threw my two newer ones in the buyer's pickup bed and kept my ancient ones.
