Statewide Fishing Compliance Checks – Suffolk/Nassau Counties
A party boat busted and illegal activity on the way to a party top this week’s fishing compliance checks:
  • On Oct. 10, ECOs Giarratana, Hilton, and Kochanowski conducted a compliance check on an anchored party boat on Long Island’s south shore. As Officers approached the vessel, individuals on board began dumping undersized black sea bass back into the water. They continued discarding the fish despite commands from ECOs to stop. Once on board, Officers recovered 21 undersized black sea bass and observed multiple violations including an incomplete vessel trip report, failure to release without undue harm, and dumping upon signal to stop. Five passengers and the boat captain received tickets, returnable to Nassau First District Court.

and again, no boat name. Is it because the fact that the captain and crew look the other way so the poachers can do what they do ? It would otherwise be good advertising for potential poachers I guess. What a world.

Stupid follow up questions. There are successful boats that do not allow fisherman to keep shorts. The mates help remove the hook and toss them back in. It isn’t a topic of discussion.

How much business do they gain by allow fisherman to keep shorts? In other words, there are a few boats at the dock. Do these fishermen select the one that allows them to keep shorts?

Does lack of enforcement encourage the risk vs reward?

those are not stupid follow up questions.

I would think that the word gets around between fisherman (i.e. would be sometime poachers) that the ___ ____ looks the other way and a good way to come home with dinner by selecting the "right" boat.

I definitely feel the lack of enforcement leads to poaching. Not everyone follows the rules, and judging from highway driving, hardly any do anymore.

Partyboats know they're rarely boarded, that's why they looked the other way. The mates are the ones to blame, they make money filleting fish .

I would think the Cap[tain would have the final say on keeping shorts. If he didn't allow it, the mates wouldn't do it. If they did, they have to find another boat to work on.

Interesting....I was on the Port Jeff dock. A DEC officer came on the bridge and a guy picked up his pail and dumped his fish. The officer went up to him. I didn't see the guy get a ticket. I later asked the officer about that and he said he didn't get a ticket because he never saw the fish. I do not want to disparage the DEC. But if I stole money for a place. If the police were chasing me and I threw the money out the window, I be OK? I guess the officer felt letting him off with a warning was sufficient. If that is his opinion, then I'm OK. I have had police stop me and let me off without giving me a ticket and I have been greatful.

Captain and mates set the tone on the boat but a customer is ultimately responsible for his own actions.

It’s the angler’s choice whether to keep a short fish in their bucket or not. However, once that fish lands in the boat’s bucket, it becomes the boat’s responsibility—and their ticket.

The only way the officer could prove possession of a short fish is if the angler is still possessing it. It does piss me off that the person knowingly had an illegal fish in that pale.

Not a surprise.

Can't always count on your clientele listening or even understanding English for that matter.

My friends boat has regulations posted in English, Russian, Spanish and Korean so there's no misunderstanding.

They should be able to charge them if they're seen throwing fish overboard as they approach.

Those who fish the West End know the name of that Green Party boat. They quickly fish out a wreck and leave nothing for everybody else.
