As of tonight the Shinnecock Canal will be closed to vessels attempting to transit in either direction. 2-3 weeks due to “ repairs “! An epic shit show in the making.

According to news 12 it is an emergency repair of a broken hinge and the locks are chained open for boats to pass.

At the risk of embarrassing myself; if the Lock Doors can be chained open for boats to pass why have a Lock at all? I’m sure that I’m missing something.

The fishing on either side of the canal is top notch compared to the west, no sympathy 🙂

FWIW,I'm not an engineer but I read that It's more work to dig a trench deep enough on both sides of the canal to compensate for the difference in terrain level.

Thanks for the reply. My question was based on a previous post and that is what caused my confusion.
