Well, it turns out the Pt. Judith location closed Labor Day, so we left well to the North, near Newport. The bait shop suggested trying near the lighthouse and Newport and Jamestown bridges. (very well known up there, so no spot burning) but that's a pretty big area. The boat's plotter may have had downscan and sidescan capability, but not the right transducer, as they were both inactive. Next, my phone app was out of range that far North. Things were looking grim for the good guys.
As we got further south, my phone app came into range to give us an area to search. Eventually, we figured out how to get at least a bottom reading out of the plotter and we found some good bottom. Very good bottom. The slow start turned into a banner day, with and easy boat limit+ to 6 lb and plenty of 4 and 5 pounders. One of my best days ever.
We probably caught as many keepers as I'll catch in a season on the western Sound, mostly on jigs and finishing up with sinkers once the current really started to rip.
