Yesterday John and Ricky, 2 of my long term and loyal customers, joined me for a very special day aboard the Captain’s Table. It was time to introduce John’s youngest grandsons, Troy and Conner, to our beloved sport of fishing. Also part of the crew was 12 y/o Cameron who is not only a football QB but also displayed some pretty good skills handling the rod and reel himself.

Bright sunshine and a steady breeze greeted us as we headed west to my most reliable Porgy drop in the Peconic’s. Right on cue, once the chum went down the fish found our baited hooks and began feeding aggressively. It was not long before all the kids were proudly posing with their catch of medium to a few jumbo-sized Scup. As is often he case in this area the mixed bag of species is amazing. By the end of the trip, we counted 8 different species landed including Porgy, Sea Robin, Fluke, Toadfish, Blackfish, Dogfish, Blowfish, and Weakfish! After putting about 15 nice sized Porgies on ice we set our sights on the next target of the day.

Because the wind was pretty strong at this point fishing some of the more exposed locations for Weakfish were out of the question for the youngest crew members. So, I opted for a nice, protected cove nearby and the Weakfish did not disappoint. Soon we were treated to a steady bite and within the last 90 minutes of the trip the team landed a dozen Weaks with 4 keepers finding the box up to 4# in weight. John and Ricky closed out the trip in rare form landing a triple header of Weakfish on the final drift!

In my mind, there Is nothing more rewarding than introducing children to the beauty and excitement of a great day on the water with family and friends. Kudos to my all-star angling team!!!

No offense meant to the avid anglers that are kind enough to sail with me.
However, these trips and taking the camp kids out on the Orient Star are some of the best times of my life!

Thanks to all for the kind words.
