Somewhere near JFK in the ocean

A buddy invited me out on another friend’s boat so we left Lindenhurst about 7:30 and headed west. Upon arrival to the spot (30 ft) we found many many boats already there.
We tried jigging and soft plastics for a while. Nothing.
The the bunker showed up?
Livelined them and I was on as soon as it reached bottom fish on. I got two at 31’’ ?? top of the slot. Then a couple sand sharks and misses.
Then towards the end of the trip I hook up again. This was no little fish. But feeling I needed to share in the catching and handed my buddy the rod. 20 minutes later he pulls up a #40 bass. I don’t know how I foul hooked a fish with live bunker but I did.
So got her boat side and cut the line at the circle hook and she swam away.
