Fish Measurements ?

someone said this is a 31” bluefish,
this APP says so,

Looks 31 to me. Guy must know what he’s talking about.

Back when I was tagging stripers for The American Littoral Society the general rule was, science measures to the fork, recreation measures to the tip of the tail unless otherwise stated

if i’m not mistaken, NYSDEC does not have a explanation of how to measure fish on their webpage…

anywho: NY bluefish dosent need a size limit, only daily total… cellie…

1) Total length is the longest straight-line measurement from the tip of the snout, with the mouth closed, to the longest lobe of the tail, with the lobes squeezed together, and the fish laid flat on the measuring device. Exception: Black sea bass are measured from the tip of the snout (or jaw), with the mouth closed, to the farthest extremity of the tail, not including the tail filament.

so Florida Rules are different from NYS rules, slightly confusing for me… .?

guess it’s insignificant to nysdec officials, due to any size , 3 limit…

hey ya know that show, “ SWAMP PEOPLE “ alligator hunters…

they are not measuring the Gators ?correctly… they are measuring over the bodies, which makes the animal longer than what it is… i feel like screaming… ?

Rules can be different between states, even for the same species. Some states want the "Striper Tail Squeeze", some don't. In the very old days NY was fork length, while NJ & CT were unsqueezed tail length.

Bottom line, make sure you know all the rules for the fish you catch in the state you catch and/or land them.
