Dining outside at marinas with little wind has been a challenge. And getting worse.

My Father used to say: "You leave them alone and they will leave you alone”.

How NOT true. One stung me on the back while working on a car. I didn’t even know he was there. It felt like someone put a cigarette out on my back. I have been stung more times this year than ever before.

I have noticed all the stores are sold out of yellow jacket traps are sold out. Anyone know of any good ones I can get on Amazon? Not sure if anyone has personal experience with them.

Once I actually looked down on my arm to see one chewing on me!! At least I was able to deal him a fatal finger flick with no sting...

it would be hazardous if 50 or so were to sting in sensitive area at the same time… cellie…

Never mind sensitive spots, the bite from 50 pumps a lot of bad stuff into your body. Can cause a major health situation if you have a reaction!

they actually came in handy for me several years (who am I kidding - several decades) ago...................

I had a grub infestation in my front lawn. Lots of the grass was dying. So before I put the grub killer down I raked up all of the dead grass. A "swarm" (I'm not kidding you - there were hundreds of 'em) swooped down & began feasting on the exposed grubs. They were cutting them in half & flying off with the bodies.

It was pretty amazing to watch.

Naturally I wasn't going to get in the middle of that. So I waited until it was over & then applied the grub killer.

A different article stated that they want meat and insects for the larvae all summer, but once late summer hits and the queen begins her hibernation, they switch to sugar (nectar, fruit, daiquiri's...) before dying off.

back in the early 60s I was wrestling with a friend on the lawn and got stung in the palm by one. Pain ! Swelling ! the next schoolday or two we had the school doctor come by and did a cursory annual exam on all of us. He noticed a dark line going up my arm to the elbow. they called my widowed mom at work to come to the school immediately. Not out of earshot I heard the word "amputation." Me being no dummy I knew what that meant ! but my mother took me to our regular gp who had been in the pacific during the war and prescribed hot water, as hot as I could stand it, off and on for what seemed like days. the darkness subsided and and the blood poisoning retreated towards my hand. I have been stung by honey bees, bumble bees, wasps etc. but yellow jackets are a whole 'nother' issue for me. This time of year I keep a badmitton racket nearby when eating on the deck or cleaning a fish. I go on offense, defense is futile.
