Went out early today ,left Jones Inlet about 8AM ,nice calm inlet, incoming tide, bumpy outside . 1/4 mile outside the inlet I let out my Bird rigs/feathers on 2 rods and nice steady action , the Bonita were bigger this week, nice and fat , small Blues and this time out I caught a bunch of nice size Spanish Mackerel. It was kind of bumpy with mini swells, the forecast was 5-10 from the SW. As long as the inlet is calm , that's all I care about. They really did a good job dredging the inlet. I was half way to the Needle and I saw a giant flock of Birds diving on Baitfish. The Spanish Mackerel, Bonita and Small Blues were feasting on the small Anchovies. Just like that they disappear. Trolled east to the Needle about 50 feet of water, 3 miles out , 72 degree water temp. My bird rigs went up and down with the swells and probably wasn't the best conditions to troll. It's a nice option going out there to troll for the bay guys. Right outside the inlet . I was out there by myself, every boat was going offshore someplace. I was by myself and didn't wanna go out far. The Panga boat handled the seas fine. Went back in about 12:30PM and tried Fluking in the inlet, caught 1 short and many Sea Robins.

Mackerel Tinker Tube Rigs with a small jig on the end, trolled 2-4 knots on the surface , is really effective for the Spanish Mackerel. Maybe I'll try them next week.
