My first trip of 2026. Felt good to get out. I will base trips on reports going forward until it starts warming up. Today I fished magnolia pier and caught nothing. I will try party boats if the weather permits.

Never thought I'd see the day of Bergal trips. Sad state of affairs? Island Current had one couple days ago.

Never thought we would get to the point where cod get thrown back and bergalls kept!

Drives me nuts yet here we are.

LOL, Bergall trips. What a sad state of affairs we are in if the PB industry has to run these trips.

Years ago, porgies, bluefish and weakfish all ended up in the dumpster.

After pictures, giant bluefin were trashed as well or used for cat food.

That said, fishing is fishing whether it's for bergalls, carp or giant tuna.

I've caught giant tuna (more like reeled in with rod in rod holder) but I'd rather catch a 4lb small mouth bass on light tackle!

My guess is that because a party boat can't advertise a catch and release trip for sea bass and cod, and there are customers who are anxious to bend a rod, they advertise "cunner" trips. But what do I know. I've been told that cunners taste great.

I love to eat fish, but I have to believe that most of us, me included, do have a few favorite species we prefer on the table compared to others.

I agree with Overbored's observation that "fishing is fishing" regardless of species. Isn't that what scaling down your tackle is all about?

I also think when we were all kids and new to the fishing game, we really didn't care what fish bit our hook just as long as we caught something. I know a bunch of adults that still maintain the youngster's approach to enjoying whatever they catch...as long as we get just one for the table!

Finally, it's important to mention that when I run the kids camp trips on the Orient Star, I have as much fun watching the kids catch any species as I do when fishing with many of my adult friends. It's all a matter of perspective.

Absolutely true and folks in Maine actually target cunners, AKA bergals. In terms of taste, a cunner tastes almost identically to a tog. Guess folks started targeting them up here because we have no tog yet, they're plentiful, and they grow pretty big.

They'll grab my cod flies and if they're big enough for a sangweech, they're eagerly invited for dinner...
