Captain's Table - Solid Bass Bite

I was determined to exact my revenge from the Striped Bass after losing 4 fish to the new, to me, Flutter Spoon technique 2 weeks ago. So, after running 2 trips on the Orient Star Thursday morning, mate Alex and I headed up to the Gut on my boat for some late afternoon Bass action. Got there on the very end of the ebb and managed just 3 shorts on the bucktails. Tried a little power drifting during the slack water but no interested takers. Then as the flood began to push it was game on. In the next 45 minutes Alex and I landed 7 more Bass with 4 in the slot range, takin home 2 nice 28-31” fish for the table.

Friday morning I had my most loyal customer, Sal, and his 2 old Air Force buddies on a reunion trip, Although Sal is quite experienced, his 2 friends have only done a limited amount of fresh water fishing in the past. However, I was promised that Sal would really “drill” them on the technique needed to catch Bass in Plum Gut using 3-way rigs. Apparently, his tutoring was spot on and the guys really did a number on the fish. In a 90-minute blitz they decked 18 Bass with the top fish going 33” and at least 9-10 in the slot range (ORL). On at least 3 drifts all three anglers were hooked up at the same time! Best of all for me was they listened so well to Sal and my own instructions that they only lost 2 sinkers and a single bucktail to the wicked rocks below! I have watched many more experienced anglers go through a ton of tackle on this often-evil drift.

The guys also want to take a few large Scup for the grill so we headed back into the bay for a quick hour on a favorite drop with almost non- stop Porgy action. Only disappointment today was again the local Bluefish population seem to be really harassing the Weakfish as we could not coax any of them to bite. Still a great day on the water for a group of 3 of our nation’s best veterans! Thanks for your service, Sal, George, and David!51823alexbass.webp51923salbassx2.webp51923bassx3.webp

Not for the faint of heart. You need to bring your A Game and demands your absolutely undivided attention, lest you constantly hang bottom. But the payoff is amazing!!
