I have a PENN Slammer III Spinning Fishing Reel; I believe it is the 4500. I usually fish with 10-pound test. I find that good for fluke, Black Sea Bass and Striped bass
However, I am going black fishing with a friend and may want to load a higher pound test line. Anyone know where I can purchase an additional spool with a drag?

Use a conventional reel for blackfishI agree with you, but it seems we're too "old school", even when using jigs!!
If I tried a spinning reel, I'd be leaving a ton of lead in the rocks. Someone went out codfishing with me a couple of years ago, bound and determined to demonstrate how superior a spinning reel would be fishing diamond jigs on ledges. I think he lost 8 jigs before he put that rod down and grabbed one of my Squidder rods...
Speaking of which, you coming up this summer?

Hi Dominick. Will be in Ongonquit the third week of September. Pretty sure Boothbay area for a couple of days too
Thanks for asking Rich
Never had good luck black fishing with spinning reels. Need the power and lift that a conventional setup gives you.
I fish them with single hook green crabs for bait. Old school set up, but it always worked well for me.
Use a three way with light mono from the sinker to the swivel. Modified break off rig if the sinker gets hung up

You’re welcomed!
“I just like my spinning set-up.”
Me too! There are times our super-picky South Shore tog will ignore a baited rig, but will slam a jig. And sometimes its the opposite case. That’s why you want to bring both.
The days of sailing out of a SS inlet and slamming the tog every single trip are long gone. So, its a smart play to bring every possible weapon along, in order to broaden your opportunities.
Plus a big tog on a light spinner can really test one’s abilities. I like that very much! Psssh, for a miserable 4 fish keep limit, why not maximize the fun? No reason I can think of.
Ehhh, maybe you lose a real big one to the rocks, once in a while.
Such is life. . . . ?♂️

Use a conventional reel for blackfishIf it were 20-30yrs ago, of course. But it's a new day with new techniques that catch well.
I'm an old dog myself (still use a sidewinder w/mono on occasion) but catching 2-4lb fish with occasional 6lber in 20-40ft is a blast!
