They dont have to be deep enough could be used on the shoreline or in the marsh is there marsh in Maine?Yes, but our 10' neap tides don't leave them open very long. The other thing I neglected to mention is that these were large boats, e.g. the 225 on that boat, all longer than 18' so I'm thinking the were for shooting sea ducks.

Lots of hypotheses, little facts. Hoping someone that knows can shed some light on this mystery.
