Mind was set to hit deep water for sea bass, was calling for 5 to 10 1 ft or less well that wasn’t the case what a sloppy mess out there, hung around some local spots trying for fluke and only shoppers were annoying porgies wouldn’t mind but they were small and just being bait Steelers along with 4 to 5 inch little sea bass never was able to get where we wanted maybe tomorrow see how it goes.

Yep we went to the Cholera this morning, we only stayed about 30 minutes we were getting beat up on a 32 footer. They were easily 4 footers.

Can't agree more.
Thursday NWS called for W @ 10-12 with 1-2' seas. Beautiful !!
At 6:00AM it was NW @ 15+ with 2-3' seas. The trip S was sloppy for us but do-able.
Long story short, our return was horrible. NW 25mph with 3-4' seas running right into it from Sandy Hook to the Narrows. Sloppy, slow going. Thank god for my pilothouse.
Back at the Marina when we were all tied up. It was W @ 10-12.
I guess if the forecast is correct for 10 minutes every day, they think they're doing a great job.
THANKS NWS==Rat Bastids!!!

I agree that Weather forecasting is one of those situations where you can be wrong, terribly wrong, a lot of the time and still keep your job! However, those who have been fishing a long time also know that conditions vary widely based upon specific areas. Also, by using your own past knowledge, many of the modern tools, and good judgment you can often come up with a more accurate prediction as to the conditions you will face in a given location.

For example, I saw the same NOAA forecast on Thursday evening showing East at 5-10 with a 1-2' sea. However, Windfinder, Superforecast, 6 pm update, showed NE 10-15 with some higher gusts until about 11 a.m. Sure enough that was what I encountered in the eastern LI Sound yesterday, a sloppy tight breaking short chop. Very uncomfortable to say the least. However, I also know that wind speeds and direction often change in concert with a change of tide and the tide for my area was due to go slack around 9:30. Sure enough, close to 10 a.m the wind started to back down and by 11 the Sound was perfectly calm and pleasant the rest of the day.

Once again, we can all get it wrong from time to time but my system works like this. I monitor 4 different forecast models, Windfinder, Windy.com, Passagemaker, and NOAA. As most have noted NOAA always seems to be the most inaccurate and often underpredicts. If I see the 2 of the other 3 models ail in agreement, then I feel reasonably sure that is what I will be dealing with the next day. Of those 3 I find Windfinder and Passagemeker to be the closest on most days and I wait for the 6 pm update from Windfinder before making a final call.

Let me know if your experience is the same as mine or if you have another "crystal ball" that works better! 🙂

When it’s northeast I don’t even bother going fishing it’s always more than forecasted

Although Northeast winds are most anglers least favorite direction, including me, there are times when they can actually be beneficial. For example, most dedicated Striper anglers know that typically the worse the conditions the better the Bass bite can be. If you are fishing Plum Gut on the flood tide with any easterly direction wind, it provides excellent drifting conditions and often superior catches.

The same can be said for some bottom fishing like for Tog and Scup. If you can find a spot to tuck inside of some land mass and be in the lee from an easterly breeze you can still catch well when most other anglers have gone home.

We went to Montauk on a party boat and the forecast was 5 mph NE winds and 2ft seas. Instead it was 20 gusting 30 NE winds at 6 to 8 ft seas I had a 20 ounce sinker at couldn't hold bottom. I caught one short sea bass the whole day. Even the captain and his crew was caught by surprise he said he checks 6 marine forecasts and all said the same thing. Light winds.
