Our youngest son lives in Queens, calls on Thursday last & wants to fish sea bass on Saturday. We get out early & had non stop fish on every drop, unfortunately most fish were last years keepers. We struggled getting 6 keepers. We had 5 fish in the box, when one of the shorts spit up a fresh 4” squid on the deck, I rigged up the fresh bait, & it produced the largest sea bass of the day, not a sea monster, but a respectable keeper. As a side note, I trailer my boat & rarely fish on a weekend, but it was my sons day off. I can see how dealing with the launch ramp on a beautiful Saturday afternoon could turn a happy fisherman into a grumpy old man real fast……..John

Way to go!
I had a similar experience in NY Harbor a couple of years ago. I reeled up a 8" squid that was holding on to my fluke bait. Before it dropped back into the water, I swung it into the boat. It let go right after that and dropped on the deck. I immediately put it on my plain hook rig. It wasn't down there for more than about 2-3 minutes when it was slammed by a 8.8lb fluke. Biggest of the day.
"Moral of the Story"-Never miss an opportunity to use live or fresh bait offered up by the 'fishing gods'.

Nice trip with your son, John, always something to cherish.

As far as keeper Sea Bass go, you may have heard this before but an old trick that often culls out the smaller biscuits is to use the squid heads for bait. All season long, whenever I am Fluking or Weakfishing I set aside the squid heads specifically for future Sea Bass trips It usually makes a big difference.

Thanks Capt Mike, I'll put that info in the back of my brain, better yet I'll write it down. I actually had cuttlefish on the boat this trip & to my suprise they didn't want it, possible because it had been thawed & refrozen more than once.......John
