Captain's Table Montauk Fluke

Finally got a nice weather window yesterday to do another Montauk Fluke run. The charter crew consisted of Matt, Frank, and the always upbeat Chef Nader!

First drop on the Frisbees found a bit of a lumpy sea with a groundswell left over from the easterly blow earlier in the week. Even with the breeze and seas running in concert, the drift speed was still very low. Better life than last Sunday but still not up to my standards. Only managed one keeper Fluke and a few shorts plus a keeper Sea Bass and more short biscuits for a 2-hour effort on several drops along the south side.

So, an adjustment was in order and we headed back to the point where I knew we could count on a steady drift. We spent the balance of the trip here and had nice action right up to the last whistle putting 8 more keeper Fluke in the box to 5.5# and another Sea Bass among dozens of shorts of both species. So, we made the proverbial “Lemonade” yesterday with some hard work and a consistent effort by a dedicated crew.

I will be off the water next week while on a trip to visit some family in Florida but back for the last few weeks of Fluking off Montauk as all the sharpies are keying on the potential trophy fish often found around that time. Some dates are still available for those trips plus remember Sea Bass bag limit goes to 6 pp on Sept. 1. That action is really heating up now in our local waters of LI Sound with many real nice sized keepers being caught now on every trip. Give me a call if you are looking to start working on filling your freezer.

Capt. Mike

Hi Bassmaster. I am docked in Greenport, Safe Harbor Stirling Marina.

Sept is our prime month for Sea Bass and if that is your focus, we can make that work on just a half day trip. Based upon what I have seen so far, we should have a decent showing of Stripers too around the big moon periods and can target both species on a full day outing.

Give me a call if you would like to get out. I would love to share some old stories about fishing in Kissena Park lake!

OK, sound good, Thomas.
The LI Railroad north fork branch does have a stop in Greenport, but I don't know the frequency and hours of operation.
We can discuss further this evening.
