Yesterday found Jerry and his 2 sons join me for their annual summer half day trip to the eastern LI Sound. They like bending the rods with some strong fish so the local population of big Blues was first up on the agenda.

Normally diamond jigging produces a steady diet of Bluefish but on the first 4 drifts they nailed four Stripers including one 29” keeper. Only one Blue wanted the Diamond to start. We continued to work a few different drift lines, but the Bass action tailed off and the Blues seemed disinterested as well. So, we switched to Bucktails and then it was nonstop Gator action. The guys boxed 6 big fish for their smoker and had a good workout as well. Funny how the Blues largely avoided the diamonds. I am also encouraged to see some Bass action daytime in August and hope this will mean we may actually have a decent fall run later this season.

Next, we moved to the north side of Plum for the short slack water window on the full moon tide. As soon as the baits hit bottom the Sea Bass were waiting and while the guys did a lot of sorting, they ultimately put 10 nice biscuits to 3.5# in the box to top off their catch.

Enjoy the fine summer weather, slightly cooler temps, and hot action on tap for the next week!
