This report is for yesterday
My younger son and I had been planning to trailer my boat up to Rhode Island and fish the windmills off of block Island.
With my son's busy schedule trying to get his younger son ready for college we finally decided on yesterday as the forecast looked great.
I prepped the boat the night before and sunday morning at 4 am we headed to Rhode Island.
We got to Rhode Island around 6:30 am after stopping to get gas for the boat, we launched after waiting for a few other boats in line that had the same idea i guess.
Headed out of the east wall for the windmills and arrived around 7:30am.
The forecast was for winds out of the NE at 5 Kts changing to sw in the afternoon.
We headed to the east windmill looking for 70 feet of water, when I found the spot we started our first drift, 10 minutes later I had my first fluke in the boat, an 18" fuke, released. I dropped down and hooked up what I thought was a big cbass, turned out to be a 22 in cod, gulp really does catch everything.
My son hooked up next with an nice 22 in fluke and so the bite turned on for about an half hour, we had 4 fluke to 22 in. and 2 cbass to 17 in in the bag.
By now a lot of boats were showing up and low and behold who shows up, NoFlukenName (jigging Jerks) youtube and John Skinner on his friends boat the Blue J.
John H on his seavee went right by us and headed to the east wind mill.
A little while later they were joined by the boys from Next Drift Fishing (Youtube)
We picked away at 4 more fluke and cbass and limited out by noontime and headed in.
My last fluke was a nice 23 in fat one and immediately started spitting up sand eels.
My son was using a new gulp color silver and dark gray, he was hooking up big time, i'm assuming they represented sand eels and started using one myself, it was that color that landed my last fluke.
We saw a shark cruising through the small fleet of boats and about 100 feet from us, I couldn't make out what kind.
Lots of life out there and we could hear the guys fishing for tuna on the radio and it was comical to say the least.
On the way back in my son yells at me that he almost hit a marlin, I was looking back at the time and saw a swordfish estimated to be 300 lbs that just moved out of the way, good to know they are still sunning themselves off of block Island.
It was a great trip, caught our limit and fished among some really good people.
Doesn't get any better than that.
