With a large family gathering coming up at my home this weekend I took advantage of yesterday’s good weather to find some fish as part of my traditional contribution to the festivities.

Started with the last 90 minutes of ebb at Orient Harbor and despite the large number of birds I was able to cull one 19.5” keeper Fluke to get things started.

Next, for the main event, I moved east to Plum Gut for the flood tide with my sights set on a nice Striped Bass for the grill. The action on bucktails was outstanding once I got the correct drift line dialed in. Took about 20 minutes for the first fish to hit the deck then it was a fish on every pass for the next 2 hours. They were really stacked. Wound up landing a total of 23 Bass myself, keeping one 30” fish and throwing back the balance including at least 2 more in the slot. At my age a 2-hour blitz like that was all I can take!

I have several other part time job commitments in the next 2 weeks including a few trips to run on the Orient Star. Then when June arrives it will be wall to wall charters, weather permitting. So, it looks like the spring bite is starting to take shape. I am sure that by early June the Weakfish will be solid and hopefully we can scratch out a little better Fluke bite locally.
