Spring Blackfish

Plan to give it a try this weekend. Heading to the Sandy Hook reef if the weather is good. Any thoughts about whether I should just bring crabs or should I bring frozen clams too?

I find that Blackfish prefer softer baits in the Spring. I’ve even used sandworms for bait in the Spring with great success.

I recall years ago we used clam in the spring but the bergals would be a problem. I have have some frozen clam I can try. I hope to get crabs from Up Front B&T. Did you ever try squid? I have caught them a couple of times on squid while fluke fishing.

If not at least you’ll have some ready for when the fluke season opens.

Crabs with the shell off should work greatWe went blackfishing yesterday at the Sandy Hook reef. Stopped on the first hump that showed life on the fishfinder because we have few spots out there. I caught 3 14 inch blackfish and a skate before the bite died. One of the other guys had a 20 inch cod and a skate. Owner couldn't connect. After an hour of no bites we moved 3 more times but never found another bite. The excitement of the day was a bite that was doubling the rod and ripping away. I suspect big striper but we will never know since the line was cut off as he tried to get around the transom. I think he caught the braid on the edge of the swim platform but he thinks he caught the engine. We consoled ourselves by trolling up three keeper stripers in the bay. All caught on light rods dragging swim shads. 2 on Chartreuse 9 inch one on white 6 inch. The six inch caught the biggest. Fish 30 to 32.
