Today was my first day of fishing this year at kissena lake I didnt catch anything but I did have a few runoffs. I did see some fish jump out of the water and a few swirls. Hopefully the weather improves soon. Here are some pics of the lake and the tackle shop I went to for the worms I used 20220405_095032.webp20220405_101739.webp

I might have to do more freshwater fishing this year. I saw 90 to 100 dollars for party boats.

Lived about 8 blocks from Kissena park when I was a kid in the late 50’s. I would hide a rod in hedges next to our house & head for the lake in the morning instead of going to school. Back then big carp & goldfish were in the lake, never caught a bass. Got my backside tanned a few times for those trips to the lake…….John

Wow, John, I could have posted nearly the same reply! I too grew up in Flushing about 8-10 blocks from Kissena Park. As you noted during those days it was mostly Carp and Goldfish plus plenty of Catfish. I don't recall ever seeing any Bass or Crappie so I wonder if they have stocked that lake in recent times.

Glad to hear you got out, Bassmaster and that there are indeed still fish in the lake of my childhood.

Dang,,, I grew up in Flushing too. Between Kissena Park and Flushing Meadow Park, those carp didn't stand a chance against us. Shea Stadium was also a nice place to play hooky in the 60s/70s

It's really funny what you remember when someone triggers thoughts of your childhood.
Although I fished Kissena park more than Flushing Meadow park as a kid, I also recall one very weird spot that had some huge Carp in it. Rarely saw anyone else there but I bet one of the good old "Queens Boys" on this board also fished it at different times. I am referring to this very narrow culvert that ran directly underneath the intersection of the LIE and Main Street that flowed into Flushing Meadow Lake. It was so narrow you could almost jump across from one side to the other. But I hooked many large Carp in that spot I simply could not control!

In my childhood I fished flushing meadow park and used pizza dough for the carp. When I used worms I got largemouth bass eels white bass perch. I might try it again just to see what's there.

I heard there's snakeheads in there. Not sure if it's true or not.

If you follow that Creek towards Shea Stadium it runs into Fountain of the Planets, then the Par3 golfcourse, then into Flushing River. We would fish the Fountain and people would be amazed at the carp we caught there.... ahh, fond memories...

This is bringing me back! I never fished it but my father was into motorized model boats that we would take there. That was a long time ago.
