Today I had a new “student” in the form of new boat owner David along with his son and a friend. Although David told me he has fished the Gut a little in the past his knowledge on the Peconic Bay system is a little thin. So, I gave him a tour of the more traditional spots we work for Fluke, Porgy, and Weakfish along with a tutorial on tackle, tides, baits, etc. August is not the time to catch Fluke inside the bay and our 90-minute exploration of some of the local drops only yielded a few birds and a lone Blue.
Next, we anchored on a favorite Porgy drop, west side of Shelter Island and I showed him the importance of using a chum pot to get a steady bite of Scup going. They culled a dozen of the larger fish to 2.5# out of a few dozen caught in another 90-minute window.
Finally, we hit the very reliable deep channel drops near Jessups for only 45 minutes on the flood and quickly boxed our 4 fish limit of summer Weaks to 3.5# So, hopefully today’s instruction helped build some confidence in David’s mind when it comes time to take his own rig out for a spin.
Looks like a good stretch of weather coming early next week which is good since I have 2 Montauk Fluke charter crews anxiously awaiting a shot at some of the big Flatties. Mixed in I also have a couple of half Day local Sea Bass and Porgy trips also on tap. So, it will be a long and hopefully very productive week ahead. Tight lines to all the fellow anglers who are planning on taking advantage of the upcoming fine summer weather.
