Went to the famous Green Lawns Tuesday for the fluke opener, although the area hasn't produced as it has in the past, for some reason I couldn't skip it. On the water with an unpredicted N/E wind gave a wind against tide condition, & not much of a drift for the two or three dozen boats in the area. I didn't give it more that a few hours of cold wind, with no fluke bites & not seeing a fish on other boats. Went west & stopped at the rip a Jessups for one small bass on a jig. Fortunately the Peconic Porgies rarely disappoint, could have stayed a caught more, but stopped at 6 for dinner. Possibly when the tide changed conditions at the Lawns would have been better, but that's for another day. Always it's a good day on the water when the rod bends.

I had a very similar experience yesterday, John. With the wind vs. tide the drift conditions on the ebb were poor so I opted for pounding the Porgies for a couple of hours in the early morning culling some nice fat ones for dinner. By 10 a.m. when I decided to give Fluking a try, 3 of the Orient Charter guys were heading into the Peconics to put something in the box.
I tried the Lawns, Greenport, and East Marion but only big birds. I do know a handful of Fluke were caught, mostly by Claudios but it was a typical chilly, slow opener. I think we need about another 7-10 days for things to improve on the Fluke front.

One possible reason for optimism on the Fluke bite is the large amount of squid in the bay right now. More than I have seen in a few years plus my buddies I talked too confirmed the same thing.
You have to be an optimist to be a fisherman!!!
