Striper Rod and Reel

I did very well with your recommendations for a Tog (Thank you) rod and reel. As Striper season is approaching, I was just wondering if anyone had a striper rod and reel recommendations--fishing off small charter or party boats (not surf). Thanks in advance.

Spinner or conventional? What technique of fishing? What body of water?

Hi Essex - first, what rod/reel did you end up with for blackfish? There could be some cross-over to Bass, depending on exactly which rod/reel you now own - as well as your anticipated specific bass fishing techniques, Examples: Jigging, bunker drifting, eeling, little bit of everything?

I got the Black Demon from Jigging World and I got the Daiwa Saltist 15P for a reel. I would be doing saltwater fishing. I would guess there would be more jigging on a party boat and more bunker drifting on small charters, which would be my two most common ways of getting out to the fish. Thanks again. I would rather do conventional because that is all I am familiar with, but if spinning is better I am open to suggestions from you guys!

I use a Shimano Trevala (TVC-66MH) with an Avet SX5.3:1. I mostly jig with it for bass.

Which Black Demon specifically did you buy? Because if its one of the heavier versions there's nothing wrong with cross-pollinating that outfit over to jigging bass. Or drifting bunker/eels either.

If you want a spinning outfit, I would look at the Shimano Spheros SW in a 5000 or 6000 size, and look for a 7' rod to match in a heavier action - like a Shimano Terez 7' MH, for example - beautiful rods by the way.

But really, there's no end to the rods out there that can wing a jig way out there. If you are partial to JW, ask for such a stick in one of their any line. Or a Black Hole Challenger Bank 731M or 761MH would be real nice. Like I said, no end to the possibilities in a powerful spinning rod.

All of the above choices are a bit pricey, so if there are budgetary limitations, then look at something from Tsunami or the Daiwa Saltist or Harrier X line. All are "popular priced."

Rumer has it that the Edison NJ Fishing Expo is a go for this March - I can't seem to confirm this, but if its "on," then THAT would be the place to go look at all the different rod lines.

From JW, I have a BDC75MH Black Demon. Could I pair that with my Daiwa Saltist 15p? If the Rod works, should I get a different reel to pair with it?

The BD75MH works well as both a blackfish and striper rod, coupled with the Daiwa Saltist 15 spooled with 30 Braid is a sweet outfit. I have built many custom rods on that blank for customers. The Challenger Bank 731M is an excellent blank as well but pricier.

As Al (Rodprof) said, your rod/reel combo is fine for everything but casting jigs from a head boat. Maybe if you intend to fish the Plum Gut or Race you might be under-gunned. But for nearly all other bass fishing situations, you should be fine.

When fishing on a party boat your main concern is always being under control.
There are many other fairs and the gamefish your targeting can get rather large.
The behemoth will run you around in a blink of an eye. You need to be cautious
of getting tangled. A outfit with a reel that's rated for 30 pound mono is adequate
for this type of fishing. The boat always knows best what catches fish. They'll always
guide you in the right direction. Drifting a sandworm can be very productive an eel
can be that much better. Can you get me the gaff? I'm standing there with my hand out.

I would go with a Shimano Terez or one of their newest Grappler sticks, but those are to my taste. You might like something totally different. You have to go and look at the available choices. I highly recommend Trophy Tackle in West Babylon, or Causeway B&T, right in my home town of Wantagh. Both owned by solid guys, and either will not steer you wrong.

One thing popped in my mind, I really have no Surf experience, but if I wanted to use the Terez or Grappler with a spinning reel, could it get me by if I just happened to be surf fishing on a day (I would do it very infrequently so I do not want to invest in that type of setup)?

I haven't surf fish in 30+ years, but I can tell you that using a 6-7' "boat type" spinner in the surf might work if the fish are close-in. But if you have to reach out to cuts between bars and that sort of thing, these rods would not have the required range. They are really designed to fish from boats.
