A school of flounder won't swim from another state and repopulate Long Island Bays with flounder again. Winter flounder #'s went down too far and the seals, commorants , striped bass keep the population from rebounding. Raise millions of flounder to 6 inchs and release them into the bay, Ban bay nets, and commercial fishing anywhere they summer. They transported striped bass out to San Francisco in 1879 and built a striped bass population out there, so NY can stock flounder and bring them back. If flounder swam in the Great Lakes they'd fix the problem right away. Remember the days when you caught flounder in Reynolds channel in May when they were migrating out the bay ? Or anchoring in the Inlet at slack tide and one flounder after another ? Cod, fluke, whiting and ling all disappeared around the same time, so it was overfishing.

When I was a teenager. On opening day for flounders I would be on the bridge going at it.
I always caught fish up to two pounds, I would go after to the tackle shop and give them
the report. The goofy kid that I was and for sure still am when it comes to fishing. The tackle
shop would relay my report to the fisherman and I would get my fishing nickname in the report
section of the fisherman. After a couple of seasons of repeating myself I decided to invite my
friend. Now both of us got our name in the magazine. You can not have more fun than that when
you're a teenager. We're talking 15, 16, 17, 18 years old.

Lived So shore LI my whole life..
Western GSB/So Oyster Bay was (IMHO) Floundering was ruined starting decades ago by pollution.
ie:nitrogen runoff from lawn fertilizer, Street runoff of all types, broken/malfunctioning outflow pipes from Sewage treatment plant at Cedar Creek..etc.
Those reasons, if not enough, combined with over-fishing,- and much later- cormorants and seal populations booming.
The recovery of the Bass stocks in the 90's + prob did not help either.
There are still small pockets/holes around that hold some(I would not eat fish from them)
Seems like too much has to be done for the Flounder to ever return to this area.
I wish there were hope, but sadly I think not.

I used to fish on this boat out of city island when I was very young. Maybe 11. Back then flounder fishing used to open on St. Patrick’s day. Guys used to show up by the droves for a shot at the flounder. We’d steam up to Oyster Bay and drop our lines in. A few fish were caught, but it was more about getting out and the start of the season. There was this whacky mate that used to work there. He had this tradition where he’d tie on a pack or two of flounder hooks to each chum pot before he dropped em down at the first spot. Every year guys would bet which would catch a fish first. Also some would bet he wouldn’t get any. Good memories. BTW he always caught a few every season using that technique.

Used to fish the back of Jamaica bay in February in the 90's and get fish.
