New Daiwa ProRex TWS 400 Premium Bait Casting Reel

New for 2021 is Daiwa's ProRex TWS 400, which I guess is intended to compete directly with Shimano's Tranx 400. I haven't seen one in the metal just yet, however, what pix I have seen seem to show a reel that is considerably narrower than a Tranx 400. Probably uses a deeper spool, so to maintain line capacity.

This reel will slot in above the Lexa series, which is a bit more utilitarian in nature. It looks like Daiwa is pitching these new reels at the Muskie crowd, which is exactly the market that Shimano dominates with the Tranx 400.

The "TWS" designation normally means that It will utilize Daiwa's flip-back T-Wing level wind guide design, which has been flaw-free in my own Catalina TW 100, though I did have some initial doubts as to its robust-ness.

Available gear ratios will be 5.3:1, 7.1:1, and 8.1:1. Can you guess which one I think is most appropriate for "our" work? 😉

Here is what Daiwa says on their FB post:

"Our latest introduction has been designed and engineered with one purpose in mind- to catch Musky- The all new Prorex TW. A heavy duty, high capacity 400 sized reel complete with an aluminum frame and side plate, UTD Drag, an adjustable length power handle and a heavy duty clutch design- the Prorex TW is a perfect match for our Prorex Musky Rods and ready to handle whatever you can throw it’s way. Arriving Spring 2021 at a dealer near you."

Hard to miss the purple reel highlights. I think this is meant to match Daiwa's JDM Kohga line of rods, which feature all kinds of purple components.

I don't yet know the level of SW protective sealing, if any. If none, not all that off-putting, as most bait casting reels are real light on proper sealing. More info as I find it. Anyway, here's the pix I've found so far:

Kohga! Kohga! Kohga!

I think that's what Bluto Blutarsky was yelling in Animal House, no?

Well, maybe not. In any case, here are the color-matching Kohga rods from Daiwa - on clearance from Platt in Japan right now, no less! Beautiful stuff, as most of the better JDM tackle is.

By the way, this is my favorite scene in Animal House . . .

Nice, a big Daiwa fanboy here.

Aa much as I love Daiwa, some of the Daiwa reels tends to chip paint here and there when it gets banged around, and the SW starts corroding the chipped area. I have 2 Lexas and a Fuego that has happened to. If I catch it quick enough, I wash the area down and put some Auto touch up paint to stop the corrosion.
I hope these are a bit tougher, thoughI would buy em anyway. 🙂

I've had my eye on a Daiwa Ryoga

It looks so sexy. ?

Yes, I agree. This is one reason why I was drawn to the "American Ryoga," the excellent USDM Pluton 2020H. No paint, just nice strong anodizing. No matter in what fishery I've used my Pluton, it has absolutely excelled. And despite bouncing around in all sorts of boats, it carries very few scratches at all. A VERY impressive little reel. One of my very most favs. . .

Nice ?
It's like my Millionaire CV-Z on steroids.

I have a recently built Calstar XL that would look AWESOME with that reel aboard. Matches perfectly.

From what I can see online, the reel won't be available until spring. That could mean early April or late May.

Let's see what I can get sold before then to "finance" the purchase....

Hey Lep
you see the new 3rd Gen Zillion coming this spring?

You mean the Zillion SV YW? Yes, I have seen some teases on it. Meh, I don't see any advantage over what we're using now - for our purposes, anyways.

And then there's this:

Doesn"t the Steez have magnesium in it to make it lighter?

Yep, but the Steez is the same form factor as the new Zillion and carries pretty much the same features. That’s why I posted the vid - I should have said that. My bad.

On another note Darth, I followed your Daiwa-loving lead and just received my brandy new Ballistic LT 2500D. Jeez, what a smooth reel it is. It will pair nicely with the three Zillions that come with me on every fluke trip. I guess I’m a bit of a Daiwa “fan boy” as well. ?

Does it matter if you don't fill a spinning reel if you are not casting

Darth - that 's the 6.3:1 "XH" version. My reel is the slower, thus more torquey 5.3:1 "D" version. Better for bottom fishing, I believe.

Gene - I dunno. But I do believe that a properly filled reel is better under all circumstances. Just loaded mine with the new lime green 20lb X-9. What a nice, super-lite, perfectly balanced set up it is, mounted to my 6' Grappler ML. Like a feather-weight fencing foil.

Lep,

I do agree that a spinning reel should be filled properly under all circumstances.

I use that reel attached to a GLoomis GL3 7" medium for most of my bay fluking, utilizing 15# power pro. Bucktail no more than 1/2 ounce seems to be the best.

Stradic Ci4 2500FA? NICE!

Here's mine, one season older than yours:

All "dooded up," with a custom ball handle knob (with two ball bearings), a reel stand on the other side, CarbonTex drag washers and a "Stella-type" ball bearing on the levelwind oscillating shaft. Loaded with 20lb Sufix 832. Not a scratch on it - and going up for sale on the Lep's Flea Market thread this Spring, along with some other goodies. Its a sweet piece. . .
