What would you consider inshore? I like to think of it. Anything under 20 fathoms.
We're obviously not in Kona.

120 feet you could cross the LI sound to Conn. Interesting question.

To me depth has little to do with it. Inshore would be more of a distance from land. More of an interest to small boats who may have to get home in a hurry if weather turns bad.

I see the sound being an ideal place for sailboating.
I come from the New York Bight area and lucky enough
to experience good fishing from the head boats.
There are many reefs, wrecks and rock piles to fish.
The two most popular ones are, 17 or 17 fathoms.
This is the most popular place for blackfishing or
jigging blues. Then there's the mud hole. It's a
little bit more of a ride. This is where it becomes
common to come across bluefin tuna and blue sharks.
It's also a dynamite area for sea bass fishing.
Thank you for your post.

Hah, got you two in a corner, considering there are spots here over 120 feet deep that you can easily reach on a cast from shore.

My definition is mostly based on gear. If I got the shark/tuna rods out, I'm offshore fishing. For Groundfish, if I'm using the 4/0 Senators and not the 3/0s or the Jigmasters, I'm offshore.

Inshore species at 17 or 17 fathoms in the ny bight that are regularly
caught on these grounds are blackfish and bluefish.

An extra hour ride to deeper waters at the mudhole now there's bluefin tuna
and blue sharks that are around. This is also a hot spot for sea bass, ling, cod.

You need line capacity and heavier lead for deeper waters.
