Back in my distant past I always remembered that we'd hear about someone catching one off of Montauk every year, usually when they were spring mackerel fishing.

I've heard it a few times. But in this day we need photo proof! Although I've heard of quite a few weird ones caught off Montauk, including a sailfish.
