Repowering question

I have a 25' walkaround rated for twin 200 max hp. Dry weight 4700lbs. Right now I have a single motor. My question is when they rate the max hp is it because of weight on the back or the force and stress that those motors put on the transom? What im kind of asking is those twin 200's would weigh around 1200lbs. A single 425 from yammaha or mercury would come way under that number but would theoretically put more stress on the back. Should I even be thinking of a 425 or should I just stick to one of the 350's ? Would i be asking for trouble with the 425? I would really like the extra 75hp of the 425 but it's really not necessary.

Your boat is rated for 400 hp maximum, don't know what year it is, but that plays a big part in what engine selection you had at the time.
Boats being made now are being built for the higher HP and weight of the 4 stroke engine, transoms are beefed up big time.
The 425 Yamaha is a beast and would probably put a hurtin on your transom.
I like twins, I like the insurance of another motor, but cost becomes a factor.
If I had to repower I would have to rebuild my transom because of the boats age, 85 25' aquasport.
I would put a bracket on it and go with twins.
Having an extra 75 hp is not going to help you all that much.

I live on the Northshore and really dont need or want twins. I'm never really that far from seatow lol.

So hp plays a bigger role than weight?

Contact a Dealer or the Manufacturer. Maybe they can give you some guidance.

Ok, I did some research on your boat, it can handle twin opti max 200 hp motors as you know.
ea. engine in 2004 ways 367lbs for total of 734lbs, at the time the same horse power 4 strokes (Yamaha) 487lbs, 100 lbs + difference ea. engine.

I don't know what you have now, but I'm guessing 225 +

So if I were to repower and single is what I wanted, here are some weights to consider.

New 2020 engine weights

Suzuki 300 604 lbs

Suzuki 350 727 lbs V6 - 55° DOHC 24-Valve

Yamaha 425 25" shaft 952 lbs Damn!!

Merc 300 527 lbs 4.6L V8

Yamaha 200 487 lbs twins if you were to go that way.

Personally a 300 hp would be more than adequate for your boat.

Best thing to do as someone mentioned, find exactly what your transom can handle (weight wise) in a single package.

I'm beginning to see that, many whom I respect here are thinking the same thing. I do like that the zuke 350 comes under the twin opti's my boat is rated for. I am definitely leaning that way.
The yamaha 350 is a little heavier. You guys were also saying to stay away from the Merc's. They are the lightest but that also concerns me a little.

I would definitely prefer the 350 to the 300 one reason is I'm thinking I would not have to run it as hard even 500 rpm less getting same speed should save some fuel.

Have you considered an Evinrude E-TEC??

Looking for new. They were on the top of my list but Evinrude is no longer. I guess I could find a last year's model but if they no longer make them I may have difficulty down the line for parts and/or service

If cost is not a factor, the Suzuki 350 would be an excellent choice, especially with the dual prop, this would eliminate the torque that a single motor of that HP would cause making your boat want to lean to port or starboard depending on which way the prop rotates.
I'm not a fan of Merc's, some people swear by them, others swear at them, one thing I do know is, they are notorious for salt intrusion under the engine cowling.

Have you considered an Evinrude E-TEC??

My brother has an E-tec, was reel nice the first year he had it, then the power trim let go, they had a recall for it, they fixed it, 2 weeks later the unit let go again, he has had nothing but problems since.

Just something to consider. If the plaque on your boat says max horsepower and you exceed that good luck filling a claim with your insurance company. If you tow a 10,000 lb boat with a brand new truck rated for 7,500lbs will your insurance pay for a new transmission? Same shyte

Thanks. I was not planning on exceeding the max hp. My main issue is the boat (2004) was rated for twin 200's. Right now I have a single on the back. What I would like to do is put a single 300 or 350. My concern is that the twin 200's would spread out the weight and stress of being underway while the single would concentrate all the forces on one spot. I am wondering if that would be too much for the transom. I wrote the company but didn't really get an answer. They basically said its a hp max not a weight max.
