Maybe just boats....and not Boat Fishing

Don't know where the myriad of bay constables the Town of Oyster Bay employs, but at least two or three times each kayaking morning I see boats on plane going 20-25 and within 100' of people's docks, even in Jones Creek. SUPs and swimmers are in those waters, thinking they have been safe as they have been for years. Many other boaters are too stupid to realize that they throw an even bigger wake when they let their hull settle. then there are the boaters (Sea Ray types) that approach small boats nice and slow and then gun it when they think they are far enough past. and age has nothing to do with it. I have seen far more 40 somethings engaged in stupid acts than high schoolers. Boating courses don't teach common sense and without law enforcement they may not learn until insurance companies and the courts get involved.

Brianna's Law is being phased in over five years. I am an instructor for the NY State Safe Boating Program. Due to Corona Virus, no classes could be held this year. Pequa 1 is correct that no instructor can teach common sense. However I have had students tell me years after taking the class, something that was taught helped get them out of a bad situation. One was even able to extinguish a small fire onboard when they remembered the PASS system. Pull the pin,
Aim at the base of the fire
Squeeze the trigger
Sweep back and forth
Plus you should receive a discount on your boating insurance with proof of a boating safety class

I have a question regarding Brianna's Law.

I have successfully completed the courses and examination in Piloting, Seamanship and small boat handling given by the Power Squadron. I have a certificate as proof.

Do I still have to sign up for a pay for courses and testing?

Is there a list of approved courses somewhere so I can see if my certificates are valid?

In General any course given by a power squadron, US Coast Guard Auxiliary or the NY State Course.

I do not know of any list of approved courses. Basically if you have proof of a boating course it is OK

and its like Hunter Safety. take the course 45 years ago and you are good. (SMH)

Do I have to carry my MMD with me or will I get some other kind of card or license to keep in my wallet while on the boat?

Hi Aquarius: Yes your six pack license is fine. It supersedes a boating safety certificate. I also carry a 50 ton license. Not being a jerk here but I have been asked this question also, the license must be valid-current to be accepted. Been asked more than once if an expired Captains license counts, no it does not. Just like an expired drivers license is not valid.

I keep copies of everything on board and never had a problem. Even if you are ticketed for a violation. You can show the courts proof with a current Captains License.

Of course. Other than observing that the rules will require some documentation I'm just venting my spleen about the growth of the state.

So when the new law kicks in, will we get another license to carry around, or does one have to carry a copy of proof of course completion.

Just to add here,... a captain's licence is much harder to acquire and requires significantly more understanding than a "safety certificate" but apparently that knowledge expires, but the six hour uber basic class is eternal.

Is there anyway I can get confirmation of that? No worries as far as documentation. I have to carry my fishing license. I will make a PDF of the Power Squadron Certificate and staple it to my license.

I ask for something I can prove compliance. You KNOW....someone will pull us over and say that you need the course whether you have a Captains Course or a Power Squadron certificate.

IIRC, there are phase ins for having to take the course and provide proof. I found this but only this-

"As of January 1, 2020, New York will begin a phase-in-by-age law that will require a new age group to become certified each year, requiring all motorized boat and PWC operators to pass a boater safety course and to carry a New York boater card by January 1, 2025. All motorized boat operators born on or after January 1, 1993, will be required to carry the New York boater card by January 1, 2020. "

What are the other phase ins ?

(I will be 70 next year and have taken three different courses, the most useless being the last one provided free by the Nassau Police. Not really their fault, it was apparently designed for kids on PWCs, and I did get a plastic card out of it.)
