Roach?

As a young teenager, I used to fish Argyle Lake in Babylon almost every week. We used to catch a fish we called "Roach" on dough by the bucket full. Does anyone else remember them or know what they actually were? They were gold all over, but were not Goldfish and were about 8" long.

No, they didn't look anything like carp or Koi, and my friend's family used to eat them. They looked like perch only all gold. I have never seen them anywhere else by Argyle Lake.

I still fish there and have never witnessed anyone catching anything like that. Hope someone else can chime in with the answer

We caught them in the lake itself and also in the basin in front of the lake by the falls.

Just for the heck of it, I tried YouTube and it seems they are very popular in the UK. Here is mone pf several video's on Roach fishing . . .

they were here and alot of them on staten island ,, i guess the roachfish died off,, maybe not,, maybe ill try as a big kid 🙂 in willowbrook pond? when the weather gets warmer ,,,,but really i have not seen those fish now at all here,,,,,, ><))):>

It is strange that they would just die off, especially when there were so many of them around.

The name "Roach" is what we called them but who knows if that is what they really were. But they did look just like the pictures online. Strange . . .

the Wiki link he post showed their European & Asian fish - no mention of them being in North America

On this side of the atlantic they are called roach in great britan.They are popular in the Coarse fishing world .Where they acctually have tournaments on who can catch the most minnows in a ciirtain amount of time.

As a kid.......I remember roaches in Avon manor Pond in Amtyiville. I also remember setting out night lines and catching snapping turtles to 45 lbs. I would bet roaches are gone but those turtles ar likely still there. Way back then, some guy used to come around at night and gaff the turtles near the shore, shoot them in the head with a .22 and take them to sell. I had one turtle bite a broomstick handle in half on me once. They are so incredibly nasty. Turtles are also in Twin Ponds in Centerport
