At the CEREMONIAL first tuna auction of the year, the first fished caught off of Japan went for $1.8 million. The is NOT a normal auction, it is a source of pride and face for the winning bidder, usually a corporation. You'll be happy to know that the second fish probably went for a $20ish price per lb.
A bluefin tuna weighing a staggering 276 kilograms (608 pounds) was sold for 193.2 million yen ($1.8 million) on Sunday at a Tokyo fish market, the second-highest price on record.
Kiyomura Corp., which runs the Sushizanmai restaurant chain across Japan, made the winning bid for the second year in a row. It paid a record 333.6 million yen for a 278-kilogram bluefin tuna at last year’s auction.
Forum/Offshore Fishing/OK, I'll post it before someone makes it out to be more than it is, yeah the tuna fetched $1.8 million

who gets that money?
I assume it goes through the normal channels, split between the fisherman and the dockside agent, with the fisherman paying the shipping costs, etc. If anyone out there actually believes the BS of Wicked Tuna that implies the boat gets the full amount that the agent"quotes", they're sadly mistaking. Things like that fish's thousands of dollars airplane ticket to Japan have to be paid, etc.

He's certainly not jumping at losing the day job. I'm dying to see what inflated "prices" the show this coming spring because per our Wicked Tuna Professor Emeritus, Old Mud, quit fishing as prices went BELOW $1 per lb...
