NOAA weather radio in Manhattan, WKRO35, 162.55 MHz, has been off the air for at least 2 years now. They are trying to find a new site for the antenna supposedly. I miss being able to get that on my VHF radio.

Yep used to use that all the time!

Windfinder and Windy.com are both excellent sites. Far more information than the standard NOAA broadcast and usually more accurate too!

Windfinder and weather.com. Windfinder usuallis usually shows a stronger wind than weather.com and the end result is usually somewhere in between.

In other words, if I check the marine forecast for a given morning at Montauk Point, Windfinder may show 17 mph and weather.com may show 5 to 10 (and believe me, I’ve seen that) - the true weather is usually somewhere in between.

Thanks George. I’ll have to check that one out....it’s always good to get multiple “opinions” and factor that into your decision on how far out you can go.

I use PredictWind - their free option is good, but for a couple of bucks a month they have extended forecasts that are usually right on the money, and a pretty solid mobile app to boot.

Having grown up with legit Meteorologists a brother and others I fish with a couple thoughts those are all good sites but some things to think about.

From experience, any winds from an East or North East quandrant tend to be the most underpredicted of all the wind direction possibilities. They also tend to come up faster than originally forecast. NWS Upton is very good for Marine forecast but sometimes they tend to under predict winds again especially from the NE or E. Whether you fish NJ/CT or NY I always check the most recent buoy readings as looking out th window in Northern Nassau county is not very relaible to what iis happening over water. Another thing with the various wind forecasting tools some go out as long as 10 days // predictability greatly drops the further out you look into the future. These wind applications are pulling data from many sources and sometimes they conflict.

There is an intersting site I like Magic Seaweed it shows winds, seas, swell and wave heights day by day out to almost 10 days take a look a fun and pretty accurate site, GK.

I downloaded Windy and it looked good. Going to do same with Magic Seaweed when I get home. Pretty soon my iPhone will be all marine weather apps (a fun game may be do I have more fishing poles or marine apps). Thanks for the suggestion!

Go too it have fun///when I had my boat I kept 20 years of records and approxinmately 500 of ocean fishing trips -thing is all the sites available now were pretty much unheard of them (I guess some techies were developing them in garages, out of site so to speak) . For weather, you tapped into TV/Radio/Newsday etc no weather channel that I recall. There were more times then I wanted that I broke Jones Inlet to be met by much worse conditions that I expected. My point there s so much amazing weather information available now that most of the time we should not be 100% fooled by the conditions< GK .

I just use Windy and My Radar (when a front or storm is approaching and/or forecasted.)

Just an update on WKROO35. It looks like they are relocating the antenna to the Empire State Building. We are going to have to wait until the fall unfortunately. See attached.

SERVICE AUTUMN 2019...

THE NOAA WEATHER RADIO TRANSMITTER THAT SERVES THE NYC METROPOLITAN
AREA IS EXPECTED TO RETURN TO SERVICE IN AUTUMN 2019 AFTER AN
EXTENDED OUTAGE. THE NEW LOCATION FOR KWO-35 WILL BE AT THE TOP OF
THE EMPIRE STATE BUILDING IN MIDTOWN MANHATTAN.

IN NOVEMBER 2017, SERVICE WAS TERMINATED DUE TO FAILED LEASE
NEGOTIATIONS. THE OUTAGE REQUIRED THE NWS TO RE-LOCATE THE
TRANSMITTER TWO TIMES. WHILE THE PROCESS OF IDENTIFYING POSSIBLE NEW
LOCATIONS WAS CHALLENGING, IT WAS ULTIMATELY COMPLETED. NOW THAT A
NEW SITE HAS BEEN FINALIZED, NWS IS AUTHORIZED TO BEGIN NEW
INSTALLATION PROCEDURES AND SYSTEM TESTING TO ENSURE THE TRANSMITTER
SIGNAL WILL PERFORM AT OPTIMAL LEVELS. THIS PROCESS WILL TAKE
SEVERAL MONTHS. HOWEVER, IF ALL GOES WELL, WE COULD HAVE THE
TRANSMITTER BACK SOONER THAN ANTICIPATED.

KWO35 WILL RESUME BROADCAST ON A FREQUENCY OF 162.550 MHZ ON 750
WATTS.
