LOL, and if that were a stack of thousands and he was standing under a cold shower, you narrow it down to Offshore Sailboat Racing, per William F. Buckley

Factor in buying a boat , annual maintenance , engine issues , dockage or trailer expense then think how often the boat is used ?
An expensive proposition for most .... Probably better off going on a Partyboat weekdays .. Ten trips @ $80 = far less than owning a 21 foot boat ..... 20 trips @ $80 still a deal vs owning ........

PS . I have NO affiliation to any Partyboat .......

Absolutely true!! Most folks don't factor in all those items. Since I get in 75 outings a year on mine, the P&L, less the capital cost, is in my favor. I actually talk people out of buying boats unless they will really use them.

True, asides from last year (two fairly significant surgeries) I am with Roccus. In the past 15 or so years the least I've used my boat was 61 times in a season. That was a bad year.

I got a late start last year. Pulled the plug in mid June, went back in in late October, pulled mid November. Somehow I managed 26 trips.

Getting back on point.

I loved my boat. My first boat was a 1975 16’ yellow dory with 25hp Evinrude with a side console. Took that thing from City Island to Little Neck Bay to New Rochelle. Even fished the back of Manhasset and Execution Rocks if the wind was cooperative. Problem was I needed something a little bit bigger. I feel this happens to anyone who owns a boat at one point or another so I went with a 1977 20’ Mako center console. Great boat! Tons of fish! Nothing like getting on your boat and going where you want when you want. You’re in charge. That’s the upside. No schedules. No other people. The downside as many mentioned is the $100 a foot for Summer, $50 a foot for Winter. Not to mention the tuneups, etc...Gas, Fuel, Bait.

Then you ask yourself the inevitable question: “Why am I doing this again?”

In the end my life became too busy and that’s ok. Eventually I’d like to get my own boat again, but it needs to make sense. I need to justify the associated costs of ownership and if I’m not going to get out on it 2-3 times a week it doesn’t make sense to me.

There's something about knowing it's there. I have the freedom to jump in my truck and drive 10-minutes, and fish any tide at anytime.

To me that priceless.

Scupper - there were two weekends in August that were horrible on the South Shore. We killed HUNDREDS of the little bastids, but they just kept coming. This was 9 miles offshore, so I can just imagine how bad it was more inshore, like at the ABR. Absolutely slayed the fish both of those weekends, but we paid the price in blood, literally. The little vampires were so viscious that they bit right thru repeated applications of Deep Woods Off. Hate those things!

Odd. Matzahpizza seemed to have less green flies this past summer and I do not know these little black flies of which you speak.
For me, having my own boat, canoe, kayak whatever equates to freedom. Free to go where I want, when I want. Sure its a four sided bottomless hole into which you throw money but what other pursuit, especially in NY, doesn't cost ?
Note to self- gotta replace the avatar soon. Phoenix sold yesterday and a medical procedure precluded me from picking up my new one at The Dinghy Shop.

I don't know how you missed them unless you weren't on the water for those two weeks. I fished from Freeport and then from Captree and they were in both places.
