Charles Altenkirck. the original owner of C. Altenkirch and Sons poses with a pair of surf caught 50’s in the late 50's. I zoomed the notice in the corner which looks to be 1956. They served many famous people and built a great fishing rod in the day. Some of their patrons were: George W. Bush, The Rockefeller Family, Lou Gehrig, Jackie Gleason, Babe Ruth, Zane Grey, Bily Joel, Ernest Hemingway and Steve McQueen just to name a few.

I cant remember the last time I was in there but it was a long time ago
Well, unfortunately the building has been torn down to build condo's. Its a damn shame and will forever change the landscape along the Shinny Canal for the worse....

Guess you didnt notice Altenkirks goneThat's the part of the canal I was referring to. When the shop was there the lot was an eyesore.
Mitch said that there are condos there now. I've passed there on my way home from Montauk. I don't see any thing
obtrusive there.

So here's a picture of where the condos are being built on the east side of canal. Both the restaurant, most recently Tide Runners, and the Altenkirch building were both demo'd.
Personally I think its a damn shame that the developers are gonna get rich and a few privileged rich folks get to enjoy a spot that used to be enjoyed by many and the landscape is changed/ruined forever😡??

So true about the limited access these days. Last season I wanted to do a little surf fishing on the North Shore. Its been over 20 years or so since the last as most of my time was in Montauk when I came down to the Island. I think I started to look for a place to park in the Miller Place area and after an hour or so of driving up and down dead ends going east, I finally gave up !
I must have been near Roanoke on my last attempt.
Boy, things have really changed in the Land of No !
