Very mixed emotions on this post. All beautiful "Fish of a Lifetime" catches, and congrats on catching, but to encourage extra pressure on the coast's key prime breeder population by holding a tournament named "Pigzilla" promotes activities that are not in the best interest of the fish, especially with the rumor that the latest assessments are showing a continued drop in the overall population.

I hope that these fish were used for food, but the back of my mind brings up old images of shark tournaments with piles of bluedogs being towed out to sea. This just reinforces my thought that a slot limit and a few trophy tags would be very beneficial for the striped bass population.

I looked around the net and didn't see anything about the disposition of fish, such as a food pantry. Do you think those fish would be released if it weren't a tournament? Perhaps some, but I doubt that the majority of trophy fish get released.

Bass is highly prized as food down here. My guess - most, if not all were consumed.

Bass is a lot different from shark, especially if they don't restrict the take for the tourney to edible species (i.e. Mako, Thrasher, etc.). If they include blue dogs - of course there'll be a pile of carcasses as they're not edible.

If there wasn't a tournament I don't think as many folks would be targeting the bigguns.

I'm sure they are, but most folks who love eating bass, myself included would rather be eating 15 lb fish than 50s... Of course I'd rather catch a 50 than a 15...

Funny..I mentioned this tournament to my cousin who lives in Norfolk. He never heard of it, even though he knows the port and marina very well. Besides owning a Prop shop down there, he also runs a small salvage company and Dive business that cleans and services lots of boats in the area. He fishes most major tournaments that the area holds. They came in third in the Rockfish shootout this year, and placed first in the VB Tuna Tourney this summer also.

On my across the Chesapeake I have to pass what is without a doubt the biggest B&T on the Shore. They usually post things like this on a large billboard on Route 13 just outside of the shop. Didn't see anything about it but that may have been simply timing.
