Bird Box (Netflix)

A somewhat preposterous but interesting movie with some terrific acting by Sandra Bullock (who no longer seems to resemble Sandra Bullock) & John Malkovich. Also a wonderful performance by 5 year old Vivien Lyra Blair. Sarah Paulson (American Horror Story) in support early on in the film.

Worth the watch - recommend.

Watched it a couple nites ago. Premise was just a little too far out there for me. Then again, I'm not a big fan of Sci-fi.

Like I said - preposterous - but stayed with it & overlooked the premise (or rather accepted it) - found it interesting - the acting helped

Peppermint

somewhat mindless if not preposterous movie that manages to entertain - worth the $1.75 from RedBox

I saw both "Bohemian Rhapsody" and "Green Book." Enjoyed both movies but give the edge to Green Book. Excellent work done by Mahershala Ali & Viggo Mortensen. I'd be surprised if Green Book doesn't win Best Picture...but the Oscars have shocked me in the past with some real disappointing Best Picture picks, like ARGO! That movie did not deserve to win Best Picture!

Something tells me "Black Panther" will win Best Picture this year.

Saw "Stan & Ollie" last night. It was a good movie. I thought Steve Coogan did a great job as Stan Laurel, which is not an easy character to portray. Stan Laurel was a quirky dude. The actress that played Stan Laurel's wife (Ida Kitaeva Laurel ), Nina Arianda Matijcio, did a great job and in my opinion, stole the movie in certain parts.

Even though Laurel & Hardy were both dead before I was born, I still remember them vividly from my childhood. I guess that's in-part due to the fact that I've seen "March of the Wooden Soldiers" a million times! Seeing the movie made me go back and watch some old clips on YouTube. Makes you appreciate the subtle genius of their comedic talent and their chemistry. They were brilliant.

this was an actual movie -or - a documentary?

I'd like to see if I can rent it. Love L&H as a kid.

Hey wader, sorry for the delayed response. Been so busy, I haven't been on NYA much lately.

Stan & Ollie is a regular movie, not a documentary. It's in theaters right now. Steve Coogan as Stan & John C. Reilly as Ollie. It was good but I'd suggest you wait until it comes on Netflix or Hulu or Amazon.

I agree, Viggo Mortensen is excellent. Liked him from the first time I saw him in Carlito's Way!

Just got back from They Shall Not Grow Old. While it's a documentary created to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the end of WWI it's very watchable, does not have a documentary feel.

Using only archival footage and images from the time, painstakingly restored footage including fixing frame rate issues to correct the Charlie Chaplain-esqe herky-jerkey and colorizing makes the images look "right" to our eyes. They went to great lengths to lip-read the silent footage and dub in the correct words and sound. The film is narrated entirely by WWI veterans recorded recollections. A little slow to start, it eventually grabs you and you get the whole arc of the war. Really brings it to life.

Peter Jackson created an amazing narrative that drops you right in the trenches of WWI. If you have an interest in the history of it I highly recommend it.

wader: Yep, it was a very good movie. So happy to see it garner the accolades it deserved by winning the Oscar for best movie. I was equally happy to see Mahershala Ali win Best Supporting Actor. He certainly deserved it.
