Record Trade Deficit

"America’s trade deficit in goods with the rest of the world rose to its highest level in history last year as the United States imported a record number of products, including from China, widening the deficit to $891.3 billion."

"The widening gap was also exacerbated by ... the trade war escalated last year." I'm sure you also understand that tariffs on Chinese goods are a tax on Americans. We, the importers, typically pay the tariffs, not China. That trade war has also lead to massive socialistic subsidies to the farm industry, but I digress.

A huge tax cut was a one time borrow and spend (deficit spending) plan that gave the money to companies, no strings attached, rather than investing in infrastructure, jobs training, education, etc., programs Republicans fought for years on the grounds they would blow up the deficit. That money is gone. It wasn't used to build more factories.

Removing regulations and environmental protections has not seemed to revive US manufacturing.

Trade war bluster has not reduced the trade deficit.

What's the plan? Stay the course? more corporate tax cuts? Fewer regulations? Obama was worse and Hillary's emails? Not as important?

I'm not going to comment on the political aspects of this, but I was furious last night when the news reported this and said that there were HUGE trade deficits with TVs, computers and cell phone. Well NO $H!T SHERLOCK!! There isn't a single US manufacturer of these consumer goods and hasn't been for years. People would have been better informed if they took the time to look at the deficit of items that are actually made here.

Our biggest export from NY Harbor is waste paper that China recycles, because you need to put something in those ships besides empty containers. China has stopped accepting much of our plastic for recycling.
Besides cars, mostly we offer the rest of the world food and wood. Not much Hi-Tech manufacturing. I believe the only things still made here are still made here because shipping costs are so high (e.g., tires and refrigerators) for those items or pharmaceuticals, because FDA regs are so strict on changes in manufacturing procedures.
Electronics was gone by when, 1975?
So how do we start making things here again? I think the government has to do more than lower taxes and cut regulations.

[The U.S. economy grew at a faster pace than expected in the first quarter and posted its best growth to start a year in six years.

First-quarter GDP expanded by 3.2% in the first quarter, the Bureau of Economic Analysis said in its initial read of the economy for that period. Economists polled by Dow Jones expected the U.S. economy increased by 2.5% in the first quarter. It was the first time since 2013 that first-quarter GDP topped 3%.

Exports rose 3.7% in the first quarter, while imports decreased by 3.7%. Economic growth also got a lift from strong investments in intellectual property products. Those investments expanded by 8.6%. ]('https://www.cnbc.com/2019/04/26/gdp-q1-2019-first-read.html')

Many a self employed person had some bad years and hopefully some great years .......... Those of us who took chances have our scars and our victories .............
I truly want everyone to work hard and succeed , having losses is a teaching moment and those who are smart enough [ and some luck] learn from past mistakes and work smarter . live smarter the next time ........

Sounds like you have an issue with the tax laws in the 1980s and 1990s. Did you write your elected officials back then to do something about it? Lemme guess. NO.

I like your idea. The problem is you’re thinking logically. The left cannot. They are consumed by hate because their shoe-in candidate lost.

Day in and day out we are all barraged with constant garbage about this man, his family, his associates, cabinet members, and his business dealings for the last 40 years.

This guy could give them every record from every business and personal transaction since he was born and they would still be talking nonsense. Not that it matters because the NYT somehow got their hands on his tax information already (no investigation there I’m sure). Not that he did anything illegal. He was abiding by tax laws. So if anything whomever left these tax loopholes open in the 80s and 90s are the real culprits, but they’ll blame him anyway.

So until the next election is over we all have the privilege of listening to whining, crying, bogus news stories, investigations, etc, etc, etc. All because she lost.

If i was him I’d hold a press conference and make the following statement: “My turn”

The left is playing on a slippery slope and they are playing with more then they can afford to lose.

He will win again.

He got hosed in many business deals. No denying that. All great business people lose money at one time or another. It’s just the nature of business.

By the time I retire social security will have gone the way of the dodo bird.

Donald Trump’s Taj Mahal casino in Atlantic City, N.J., nearly flushed Forest Jenkins’ company Triad Building Services down the toilet.
In 1988 and 1989, Jenkins, a contractor, spent months installing the stall walls in the bathrooms of the mega-casino. The job was supposed to pay $231,000. The check for the work, though, never showed up, stretching the finances of Jenkins’ small construction business. Eventually Jenkins, whose business did manage to survive the episode, was paid $70,000, or 30 cents on the dollar in the restructuring that followed. The episode still upsets Jenkin’s daughter, Beth Rosser.
“I grit my teeth every time I see him on television talking about what a wonderful businessman he is,” Rosser said of Donald Trump in a CNN interview in September. “He stepped on a lot of people.”

I saw the documentary also. You want me to start posting every negative thing some dems have done? I don’t have the time. I can however get one of the guys that was in on the action days before the Benghazi embassy attack happened to post on here. Let me know and I’ll reach out to him.
