Had the Ed party join me today for a 6-hour combo species trip. Original plan was for a Fluke/Porgy split but with the North Fluke fishing still being very sporadic I suggested a change in plans. While doing some scouting myself on Thursday, I found the Bass bite in Plum Gut has finally taken hold so we made the choice to switch to Bass Porgy and pass on the Fluke. It turned out to be the right call.
We spent the last 2 hours of flood just after sunrise in the Gut and bucktails and some swim shads produced steady action the whole time. While the majority of the fish were 22-26”, hard work and perseverance on the part of the crew eventually produced 2 nice keepers at 29 and 33” the larger fish feeling like a fish in the high teens. A total of 17 Bass hit the deck so the rods were bending a good portion of the time.
When we lost the tide out east, we headed back into the Peconics to cash in on the still reliable spring Porgy bite. The action began even before the chum pot hit the bottom and continued until it was time to pull the hook. These fellows are big Porgy fans and well over 100 fish up to 3# made it into the box to fill out everyone’s coolers. We also culled 3 keeper Weakfish and tossed back a few smaller fish, in addition to catching about a half dozen small Blues, and a few of the usual “heartbreak” out of season Sea Bass to 2.5# The early morning fog burned off nicely and everyone enjoyed a beautiful sunny and warm finish to the day.
Starting next week, in addition to focusing on the now steady Bass fishing, I will begin working waters to the east hoping a better Fluke bite will develop out there. There are still a couple of June Weekend dates open for combo trips. July and August weekends are starting to fill in for the coveted Montauk Fluke Trips so if you want to have a good shot at landing some serious now would be the time to book a date.
