Been out a handful of times and have marked fish throughout each outing but no hook ups. I’ve tried chunks, livelining and all. Is anyone else having a hard time to get these bass to bite? By now i’d be hammering down on them, but it seems they are honed in on something besides bunker and porgys. FYI this is Western sound. This is the worst start in years for me and is becoming really frustrating. I hear guys here and there getting some, it not as plentiful as the last couple of seasons.

Hopefully, it's one of those late years, but I agree it is alarming. Traditionally this is always one of the best weeks of fishing in the Smithtown Bay area.

I'm hoping to George, time will tell.

For bass I'd say my best weeks in the bay historically start in about two weeks. I have yet to target them asides from the schoolies here and there. (and they are all over!) I plan on fluke fishing hard this this evening and through the weekend, then switch over to (primarily) bass next week.

Need to see more bunker in the water....

Just wondering if all this rain and run off this spring is part of the problem? Never saw so much rain like this.

I’m hoping so. Sporadic fish being caught, but everyone I know is having a slow start. I’m hoping it’s a late year. I had a good run off last night after 2hrs of nothing, but managed to wrap around a rock or some structure and broke off while setting the hook. ?

From the tackle shop guys and others I have spoken to, the fishing on the poor side of the island (in the bay) has been poor since Sandy. But I have already brought home as many fluke this June as all last summer. (But for me, that is just evidence of how poorly I did in 2018.)

Let me join in.
Fishfinder has looked like it was on display mode, but few fish in the boat.

Definitely the worst May and early June since I’ve started fishing in the sound. Sporadic fish and you have to be lucky and land on a migrating school to catch a few.

I’ll be out again today and will report back in the LI Sound section.

I always say that when my Hummingbird tries to tell me there are fish below, that its simply on "demo" mode !
