I used both, had problems with braid, if I had to choose it would be Mono...
mono - $35.00 = 2600 yard spool ?
braid - $35.00 = 300 yard spool ?
cellfish...
$90 - $110 for a 1200 spool of 30# braid. Once you master it, you'll never even think of mono.
OTOH, it helps to have a boat since I've learned to immediately "troll" the top 100 yds of hookless line behind the boat for for a good 10 min right after spooling to avoid wind knots. I repeat the trolling as soon as wind knots reappear, usually once a month. Besides the improved hookups, you'll pick up a good 10 yds on a cast because of the decreased line diameter.
From the Roccus Rules Book:
1. I NEVER have backing, just because I may run into BFTs whenever I fish, and I'd kick myself trying to save a few bucks and getting stripped instead of having that extra few seconds to fire up the boat to start chasing.
2. I don't use a topshot, just put a snap swivel on the end of the line and use flurocarbon leaders on my lures.
