*Volkswagen is halting production of the last version of its Beetle model in July 2019 at its plant in Puebla, Mexico, the end of the road for a vehicle that has symbolized many things over a history spanning eight decades since 1938. *
FRANKFURT, Germany (AP) - t's the end of the road for a vehicle that has symbolized many things over a history spanning the eight decades since 1938.
It has been: a part of Germany's darkest hours as a never-realized Nazi prestige project. A symbol of Germany's postwar economic renaissance and rising middle-class prosperity. An example of globalization, sold and recognized all over the world. An emblem of the 1960s counterculture in the United States. ***Above all, the car remains a landmark in design, as recognizable as the Coca-Cola bottle.

*OK - raise your hands - how many of you owned one or knew someone who did?

Never owned a Beetle, new or old. I do have a Jetta a.k.a. the Mighty TDI. Mom owned an original Beetle (in Germany no less), as did my uncle. And I certainly know a few people in the neighborhood who had beetles. Oh, and a fishing buddy had a New Beetle. It was bright red with flames on it. Goofiest thing you ever saw a middle-aged guy driving.

use to have a TDI - 3 of 'em as a matter of fact - great vehicle - 1st one got taken out by tree during Hurricane Sandy (only a year old) - 2nd one one I traded for a GLI due to the emissions scandal - got a good deal on it - drove it for 4 years - paid $25,000 for it - they gave me $22,000+ that I put down on the GLI
really miss the gas mileage - 50-60 local/highway - 64 straight highway - use to make it to Florida on 3/4 of a tank of diesel - better performance as well - car could fly
6-speed in all of 'em
