Slow fishing off Montauk

Well, the Jillybird went out fishing this weekend for the first time this season from her new summer home at the great Montauk Lake Club. I discovered this place last summer after suffering shell shock at some of the Montauk marina prices, and this year, I decided to come out for the summer after running the Jillybird up from Key Biscayne a couple of weeks ago with my son, Capt. Wylie. Last weekend, the fog was a bit too thick for fun fishing. Yesterday, my wife and dog joined me for some fluking. Action was not on fire. Just a bunch of short fluke up to about 18 inches. But even then, the action was way slower than it should be for Montauk. Some spots had no action at all, and I had to go to my "never fail" spot to finally get some steady fish. Wind picked up on our return making for an action filled docking adventure as I get used to docking in a fairly open marina.

This morning, we caught the end of the incoming tide at the Point for some bassing on live eels. This is usually no miss fishing three days before the July full moon, and the fishing was supposed to be epic last week. When I pulled up to the grounds and didn't see more than a handful of charter boats, I knew we were in trouble. Even my "never fail" hot spots were barren. We fished till the tide started petering out for a big skunk. My bet is that the fish moved over to the Sub buoy (federal waters) or to Block (which was too far to run for the limited tide we had). My son, Capt. Wylie, is coming up for a week this Tuesday from Miami to run my boat, so we should have some great fishing and better docking. This 20 year old now runs his own successful charter business out of Key Biscayne on a 31 Contender, and he's just awesome. Can't wait.

Congrats on capt Wylie's success. The apple does not fall far from the tree. You are blessed, CIAO, John.
