I’ve seen plenty of them around from the back to beach fronts but I haven’t seen any over 2lbs locally.. where are my precious bluefish going ? And why are they so small ? I’m about to just give up till September..

I’ve been looking into the bluefish issue as have our reguLators. Without getting too deep into the weeds right now, let’s just say our practice of catch and release has shifted a huge chunk of the quota to coms and we’re going to see a reduction in our bag limit.

They did this with tog and now coms have all year to fish and we’ve been reduced to a 6 week season. The same is now happening with bluefish.

Timely post, George. I was just looking a pictures from last year when I took my younger daughter to the bridge in Centerport and Northport Docks to catch the snappers. Hopefully they will be plentiful mid August.

That’s exactly what I was thinking sad times ahead..

This would be really stupid (though I'm not doubting you). In the case of tog at least, the fish has a solid commercial value.

Who is paying good money to buy bluefish? I've seen them pretty cheap any time I've run across them at the fish market, I can't imagine the wholesale value is worth all that much. Are regulators really willing to give up a fish's sustainability to get the comms a few bucks?

I opposed the amendment from the day it was introduced. Anytime it involves recreational anglers transferring unused quota that can NEVER be returned, you know it's a bad deal. It essentially penalizes us for our conservation of the fishery as every fish we release is handed over to the com fishery.

I know this is hard for our young anglers to understand but those are the sad facts.
