Captains Table Solid Montauk Fluking

Following a somewhat disappointing trip on last Sunday’s charter with tough wind vs. tide conditions, dock mate Paul and I left Southold this morning with a perfect forecast and high expectations.

First stop were my deep drops that had been so good to me virtually every trip I have made to Montauk this year so far. Today an hour’s effort only produced a few short Fluke, some Ling and then an onslaught of the dreaded Dogfish.

So, we moved only about 1.5 miles north and found a nice pod of hungry Fluke and over the next 90 minutes managed to put 6 nice fish up to 7# in the box, all except one on the Nuclear Chicken Gulp worm. The highlight of this blitz was one drift where both Paul and I had strong hits simultaneously and we actually landed 3 keepers on 2 lines, with Paul getting the honors catching a double header of keepers! Soon after the tide dropped out and we fell back into a pattern of taking only short Fluke and a few small Sea Bass.

Moved further north again with the start of the ebb and found a few more keeper Sea Bass and short Fluke. Finally finished at Frisbees and took a 3.5# Fluke brining us to within one fish of limiting and a couple more nice Sea Bass.

So, overall, a very satisfying day in really beautiful conditions. I will be fishing to the west this weekend on a friend’s boat and then be back east with 3 charters in a row starting next Thursday, weather permitting.

My August calendar is filling up but there are still a couple of weekend days open along with several weekdays. If Montauk Fluking is your ”cup of tea” then now is the time to book a trip and cash in.
