Was ground fishing this AM in our bay. While fishing and catching micro pollocks, I looked at the depth finder screen and said, "That looks like tuna coming up" and sure enough, three large (~ 6') tore up the surface right around the boat and immediately disappeared. After I caught my breath and cleaned up my shorts, I debated putting a spreader bar over the side and decided against it until I saw this trio tearing up the surface multiple times about 1/2 mile away so over the side the spreader bar went on the heavy artillery. Dragged it at 7 kts for 1/2 an hour with nothing, which made sense because as soon as I started trolling the tuna were gone.

I think I'll keep a spare set of utes on the boat for the rest of the year...

What is the depth in the bay there?

I was fishing a 10 fathom hump on a 20 fathom bottom. Depth is easy in Maine. You can cast off a ledge into 15 fathoms in spots. You can be in 60 fathoms and still be in state waters.

Not unless I had the rod in my hand and I knew where and when they were coming up. It was a "once and done" jump situation, they didn't linger in a particular place more than 3 minutes. There was no bait on the machine, nor bait exploding when they came up by me.

Pretty common for big BFT to just bust out of the water with no visible signs of them actually feeding. The best bet would have been starting a chum slick. I trolled in hopes I'd cut them off as they went up and down the bay so I focused on choke points.
