So last week was pretty good in 28 feet of water. I thought I had this fluke thing cracked, but yesterday was a near bust. Only one 17" short.
The day started well. I spotted and netted some perfect size peanut bunker and thought I was in for a great trip, fishing them live, but not the case. I tried some structure spots I thought might hold some larger fish for nada, then over to Matinicock Point for the 17" short on the first drift. Then the drift just died, right at the middle of the tide. Tried power drifting, but no luck.
I finished the day porgie fishing. They bit fast and furious on clams. Mostly keeper size and up.
Never give up! Never surrender!

No drift = no fluke. Maybe more accurately, Western LI Sound = no fluke, lol. Keep on fishing. I don't miss the Western Sound this year, boys.

well if you learned to fish in western long island sound, then move to other parts of the coast you will be amazed how easier fishing is! The western sound trains you to be a better fisherman, although i hear the fishing has declined since i finally moved out of there in 2007.

Bowarrows, for some reason which I can't figure out, the past two summers in the Western Sound have been dreadful, except that last summer, the striped bass fishing was insanely good until August. The only fish that has really saved the day has been porgies -- and how many damn porgies can you catch before you want to stick a gaff in your head? There are a relatively decent number of sea bass to spice up the catch, but fluking has been horrible, and bluefish -- what are they? Although this summer, some cocktails managed to get lost in the Western Sound. Until these past few years, we had pretty good fishing here. Blues were solid all summer. Fluke fishing was great from early June until September, though the number of keepers would drop off considerably as they got picked off. Porgies have been great for years now. It's really the absence of blues and fluke that have hurt our summer fishery. I can't figure it out, though both species seem to be in big trouble around the Island. That's why I moved my boat out to Montauk this summer for the whole summer. I've had a boat in Mamaroneck since 1994 so that's a long time. I just couldn't take it anymore.

Yes i remember your posts well. We both fished similiar areas but i was out of Cos Cob so i would fish sound reef a lot, 32a, wrecks behind captains island, the hens and chickens etc etc. ihad my best days off todds point at that red can on the south east corner. i caught my bp weakfish and fluke at that spot. Ahh the memories. I didnt start fishing on a boat in the sound till 1998. I got the boat right after i got the surfcasting addiction. I would fish the southern road island coast surfcasting and would just sleep in my truck on the beach. Well i have a lot of observations why the fisihng has changed in the sound but to many comments to make here. if i had to pick three words i would say.......water temperature and bait...........so i am sure many would agree. i remeber fishing on the delmar for mackerel when i was 12 yo. well i still have hope for the future, coastal managment is going to change drastically in the next 100 years, much to the chagrine of land owners wanting to get a permit to alter there seawalls. Permit denied!

I recall complaining to Jack at Jacks B&T about not catching fluke when I had no drift and the reply I got was ...."you just need to fish for them differently". I've seen a lot of old timer's catch fluke with no drift. Just takes a lot more effort bucktailing them etc.. I left for VA over 10 years ago and sad to here the fishing is not good in LIS anymore. I was on a Huntington boat last month and the mate blamed the comorants. Forgot how much weight in fish they eat a day. Something to the effect of 3x their body weight.
