A bit of a late report, I just have had a a hectic schedule. My son and I fished up in the King George Fishing Derby a a little over a week ago. We are not big tournament fisherman but like the one because it’s very family orientated and the proceeds go to help protect the lake from invasive species.
There are both kids and adult categories for largemouth, smallmouth , lake trout and salmon and it’s a 2 day event. This year there was over 180 participants and it’s a very well run and fun event. Lake George really has a very good bass and lake trout fishery that goes under the radar screen.
My son and I just concentrate on lake trout and we do it a bit differently then most in that we jig them rather then troll. Basically we yo yo jig small jigs in key areas we’ve discovered over the years. We’ve been doing it this way for about 5 years now and it’s funny, when we first started people use to troll by us and look at us like we had two heads....lol. Well 5 years later and 3 first place finishes by my son and one for me , no one gives us those looks anymore and now we actually see a lot of boats jigging now. Out biggest to date was almost 14 LBS and we’ve had several between 8-10 LBS. really fun on light tackle.
Well this year my son managed to win the child division again with a 6.5 LB fish and I was lucky enough to finish 4th in the adult category with a 8.7 LB fish. We also managed several smaller fish that we released.
There are really a great group of guys who participate every year and a very fun awards ceremony is held on the last day. . Highly recommend if you are up that way and it’s for a great cause. I’m not sure how I can link it but you can read about the tournament in their Facebook page.
