loads of blowfish

took a ride out on my friend Dannys boat in the Great south Bay yesterday. heard about the tons of blowfish which made a comeback, haven't caught them since I was a kid; some years ago. had to get it out of my system. well it was drop and reel, all nice fat blowfish. caught a little over 100 in no time.

Eyeglass Joe is back! It's been years since I've eaten a blowfish. It's great to see them back in such strong numbers. Any theries on this surprise cc comeback? Will they ask around or will it be like the food bite we had a few years ago?

All due respect, but that's an awful lot of blowfish for a fish that is making a comeback

It does have that "old days" look. Remember when we had all of those cod a few years back? They disappeared pretty quick. With that said they are fishing legally. But I sure I wouldn't want to fillet the all!

Them blowtoads been back for quite a while but very reigional mostly fire island inlet and oakbeach area then about 4 years ago started spreading thru moriches and east now some being caught on the north shore .I for one know the are the pest they were 45 plus years ago in moriches . But a delicious little pest they are.

In the 60’s and 70’s Winter Flounder were plentiful in the back bays of Jones. Our mantra was ‘it’s pan size’ and we kept them. Now I regret that; having wizened a bit. Not passing judgement, but just saying how it was back then.

What confuses me and my aging mind is seasonality. I cut my teeth fishing on blowfish, but they were early season events in the Sound; in the late 50s/early 60s; by mid-July they were gone. This Fall Fishery seems unusual.

My favorite way of catching didn't even involve a pole, and sometime didn't involve bait. They would often come into the shallows < 1 ft of water and nibble your toes or bait so I'd stand facing the beach and drop a crushed Skimmer Clam in front. When a few came over to nibble on toes/clam I jump at them and they'd swim up onto the beach!!

Nobody ever said they were the sharpest tool in Poseidon's Shed...

yes, we've been fishing together for 30 years, not just nice guy...awesome fisherman and hunter

Ruccus in a way you are correct them big blowfish and kingfish were always a flounder fishing bycsatch late aprol june and later but I always did catch them thru the summer in crab traps.

The bottom must be covered with them in the western end of the Great South Bay. While kayaking for the elusive weak or even more elusive keeper fluke, I see boats all over anchored and fishing for them. I caught a couple on a fluke rig last week and admit they were tasty but come on ! Even a gob of seaweed presents more of a challenge landing ! Hopefully all these guys fishing for them will eliminate enough so I can keep Gulp on the bucks next year.

But think about how many youngsters will get hooked on fishing catching them, having them inflate and then sitting down for a tasty dinner! This old curmudgeon started his fishing career with blowfish, as I bet quite of few of you here "of age" also did. I don't see the freshwater crowd poo-pooing sunnies, something that most sportsman in that medium began their careers on when they were young.

Probably the first fish from the salt for me as well. Carp and bullheads from a local lake. Then I found lmb ! As for the blowfish, catch em up everyone, Puhleeeze !!
